Under 12 Swan - A.R.K’S 14 def Nedlands 7
Hard to pick where this game slipped us we were dominant in every area except the scoreboard. From the kickoff we looked to get the ball out wide and make use of the full size pitch the Arks defence playing the whistle up flat and “quick” making things tough for our backs. Ten minutes in and neither team were giving up points, our tackling of the big (what do they feed them? Arks forwards ) was a credit to our boys. After some inspirational tackles from Rueben, Johnno and Alex we started to find some rythmm in attack the forwards active at the breakdown and supplying good ball several good runs from Alex, Evan and Rueben were saved at the bell from a good Arks defence. Our forwards now were winning scrums and lineouts, much against the odds, Hamish Hall and Patrick at the frontline doing a great job. Following good phase lead up work we saw Aiden ,on the wing, going desperately close to a try down the tuochline. As the half continued the pattern was the same neither team giving an inch and both playing good rugby to a nil all conclusion.
Minutes after the restart Arks scored the first try when we missed a couple of tackles but from the kickoff got straight back into the game and looked promising in attack ,Jacob lurking in the centres , Johnno finding some run from full back and Rueben in a standout performance, from the sickbed, also making some dashing runs . Arks however kept solid and eventually scored a very dubious try against the run of play. Not dropping their heads for a moment the boys put together the best rugby of the game and past weeks from here ,Jacob going very close to scoring so to Johnno also only stopped by fingertip tackles by the defence . With the pressure mounting Arks were giving away penalties Harry copping a crude high tackle ending his great game at flanker , Alex running the tap wide for James to score a try with three defenders all over him great work mate. Bluepigs fought hard right up to an early whistle and did themselves proud it was a cracking game to watch and the standard of rugby and team work has greatly improved in a season well done boys.
Under 11 Gold - Nedlands 14 def Wanneroo Green 7
The question on Saturday morning was how was the final game going to define the Nedlands Under 11’s season. Were we going to go out with a bang or a wimper. After 2 hidings in a row and a loss of form and confidence post the school holiday’s the boys had one chance left to show their parents and supporters their real colours and play the brand of Rugby we have all come to expect from this team. The answer was clear in a confident and skilful performance against one of the better teams in what has been a very high standard competition.
Converted tries to Jacob McKellar (who stepped in at the last moment to help us out) and Callum Thomas in the first half set up the game and despite the fact that we were outscored in the second half the boys never really looked like they were going to lose the game. Some excellent try saving tackles from the likes of Matt O’Clery and Grae Cumming kept a storming Wanneroo from overhauling the first half lead. The forward pack was strong all day and while they did not dominate the opposition they provided a strong platform for attack.
One passage of play summed up the game and the season for the Lions. Winger Seb Ortiz made a perfectly executed tackle right in front of the parents to stop a blind side attack down the line by Wanneroo and got straight up to lay a second tackle on the player who took the ball from the first tackle. It was a great display of commitment, courage and confidence in his technique and when the team showed these qualities during the season we dominated even the best teams in the competition but when we didn’t we were pretty ordinary and got rolled. Thankfully Saturday reminded all those watching what the boys could do when they put it together as a team.
Looking forward to next season already!
